Despite previous isolationist policies, the United States entered World War I in 1917. The image of the soldier and young women was popular during World War I in the United States, France, and Britain. Part of the incentive for young men to go to war was to protect women and the home so the imagery of young women and the flag were often used in propaganda. “For the flag and you” invoked both national pride and 20th century ideals involving masculine protection that gave men a personal reason to go to war.
